Mara Sopa Lodge is one of the most established safari lodges on the eastern edge of the iconic Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Perched on the slopes of the Oloolaimutia Hills, it offers guests sweeping views over the rolling savannah and easy access to some of the best game-viewing territory in East Africa — including sightings of the Big Five and the spectacular Great Wildebeest Migration.
Built in a style that echoes traditional African rondavels with conical thatched roofs, the lodge blends comfort with authentic safari ambience. It has around 99 rooms, including standard rooms, spacious suites and a honeymoon suite, all equipped with en-suite bathrooms, mosquito nets, and private verandahs overlooking the reserve or the lush gardens. The design and surroundings give a relaxed yet classic safari feel.
At the heart of the lodge is a large public area featuring a bar and lounge with a central fireplace, a restaurant serving international and local cuisine buffet-style, and shaded outdoor dining spaces. A swimming pool and sitting terraces offer pleasant spots to unwind after a morning game drive, while a gift shop and Wi-Fi in public areas add convenience for guests.
Activities arranged from the lodge make the most of the surrounding wilderness — daily morning and evening game drives, full-day safaris with picnic lunches, hot air balloon excursions over the Mara plains, and cultural visits to nearby Maasai villages. Birdwatching, nature walks and sundowner evenings are also popular.
Located about 250 km southwest of Nairobi, the lodge is accessible by road (roughly 5–6 hours) or by domestic flight to Keekorok Airstrip followed by a short transfer. Its position near the Oloolaimutia Gate means more time exploring the reserve and less time in transit.
Overall, Masai Mara Sopa Lodge offers a comfortable, mid-range safari experience — ideal for families, couples and wildlife enthusiasts seeking a classic African adventure with scenic views, abundant wildlife, and friendly service.
In addition to all of the above, the honeymoon suite has an extremely large, luxuriously appointed bedroom with a king size bed; dressing table and indoor seating area. Its lavishly appointed bathroom contains both a shower and a sunken bath; and its sheltered veranda offers some of the most magnificent views available over the African landscapes below.
